What is Photonics?

Photonics is the Science of the Harnessing of Light.  Light is central to the origins of all life and light is playing an ever increasing central role in our daily lives through its uses in medical treatments, communications, manufacture, energy production and many more.  Light is the all-important resource for today's technologies which are growing every day.

Industries which utilise light are major economic drivers, creating new jobs which in turn initiate new solutions to global challenges in energy, education, agriculture, and health.  Light also is utilised in the protection of our cultural heritage, by enabling us to gain a greater understanding of art as well as helping to preserve masterpieces.

Light has become the key enabling and cross-cutting discipline of all of the scientific and engineering challenges which face the world today, and an awareness - as well as an appreciation -  of the versatility and significance of light is an important factor for everyone's consideration.
